Tobago touched by physicians Trinidad Guardian – July 31st, 2002By ANESIA BREBNORGuardian Tobago Bureau Four Tobago patients were “touched” when they were operated on by a visiting group of medical doctors from the United States. The doctors performed hysterectomy surgeries and fibroid removals last week. The medical update was given last Friday at a media briefing held at the Scarborough General Hospital. Secretary of Health and Social Services Cynthia Alfred along with the doctors from the Brozos Medical Associates in Texas gave the update. Obstetrician/gynaecologist and co-ordinator of the group Dr. Noreen Johnson, said the medical programme called “Touch Tobago” was aimed at “touching” Tobago physically, mentally and spiritually. She said the team was motivated by their own personal relationship with Jesus, who has always been referred to as the great physician. This is the second trip for the voluntary Christian group, which was mainly comprised of obgyns (Obstetrician/Gynaecologists). It was also used as a follow-up procedure on the doctors’ previous visit on June 22. At the last visit, the foreign doctors collaborated with a local medical team to provide primary health care to more than 400 patients in the rural areas in Speyside, Charlotteville, Castara, Delaford and Parlatuvier. The team also conducted a series of pap smear tests. Tests were also done for diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS and hypertension. Out of the 92 women who had been screened for cervical cancer through the pap smear test, 15 showed signs of abnormality. However, since they were labeled as low grade lesions, they were encouraged to receive treatment. Cynthia Alfred congratulated and thanked the team for their contribution to health care on the island, stating they were able to touch Tobago in a positive way.
