Moves to combat dengue in East Express – Aug 3rd, 2002
The Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) has launched a public health programme aimed at combating the outbreak of dengue disease. The programme focuses mainly on the counties of St Andrew and St David. According to an ERHA statement, the number of confirmed dengue cases has doubled in the first five months of this year as compared with the same period over the last two years. “The statistics also revealed that of the 52 districts in St Andrew and St David, 32 of these were above the acceptable aedes aegypti index of five per cent,” the ERHA said. The first phase of the project was launched last May in Cumuto and was extended to Valencia and Sangre Grande in June. “While significant effort will be placed on clean-up activities, water storage issues and spraying, emphasis will also be placed on health promotion through home to home visitations and lectures to schools, community groups and churches,” the statement continued, adding that the programme will target 25,000 households. The project is expected to move into Manzanilla and then to Toco. Already, the statement said, almost 7,000 household have been visited and reductions in the presence of aedes aegypti mosquitoes was reduced. In some cases, the ERHA served legal notices in premises found to be encouraging the breeding of mosquitoes. The project is being co-ordinated by the Public Health Inspectorate at the office of Country Health Administration St Andrews/ St David. To implement the plan, the ERHA partnered with other agencies such as the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation and the Insect vector Control Division.
